電郵之將死?

看slate.com一文章: The Death of E-Mail ~ Teenagers are abandoning their Yahoo! and Hotmail accounts. Do the rest of us have to? 筆者Chad Lorenz提到電郵已逐漸被年輕一代捨棄, 因為它的功能被其他networking工具/平台如facebook, myspace, twitter和blogging等取締.

文中提到2002年時"a kid who wasn't all that chatty on the phone but was almost always glued to her PC", 其實我也一樣, 不太喜歡傾電話, 但卻可以和朋友在網上聊天數小時, 上網更是可以晝夜不分地玩個不停. 其實這個現象都不只局限於求學時期的年青一代.

筆者說那個年頭當大人們都用電郵時, 這群小孩子已不再寄電郵了, 因為他們溝通的渠道已去了IM.

Lorenz說, 廿五歲以上的都仍然依靠電郵, 無法想像生活中沒有電郵. 真的麼?

2005年, 五成以上的十來歲青年都喜歡用IM多於電郵. 而twitter及facebook的出現更令許多舊有的hotmail及yahoo accounts原封不動.





都是因為電郵不夠完美.

正如twitter上的bloggers都說喜歡上去"嘔泥", 難度我們會用電郵去嘔泥然後寄給百多二百個朋友麼? 不會吧. 這些無聊牢騷或簡短現況, 在twitter, 在facebook上, 感覺方便又合適.

加上手提電話的方便, 更新更快更容易, 電郵更加變得累贅和煩瑣.

年輕的一代, 一天可能有50個以上的電話短訊往來, 整天無論在上課抑或回家都有朋友時刻陪伴著, 這就是他們喜歡的溝通模式. 同樣, 我們這一代可能也差不多如此.

"Instant messages, on the other hand, are like Post-it notes, handy for a few minutes but hardly worth saving."

"While IMs and text messages have a throwaway quality, e-mail is for the sentimental."

不過一個永恆的現象就是: the grown-ups will be the ones who are forced to adapt. 新的溝通方法我們始終要跟著用, 不是out與not out的問題.
