紐約Subway

NYC subway is like an ugly child only a mother could love.

Not too long ago we were still using tokens, and they actually had people collect tokens at the turnstiles. Finally, fast forward to the 21st century, we have something called metro card, the greatest invention since sliced white bread.

Anyway, we've made the subway filthy and scary so no scum sucking yuppies or tourists want to ride them.

laichungleung: btw, have u noticed the train w/ the sign to "Flushing" in the photo link?

Yes, I did, picture number 3 from Slate's site. That one must be relatively recent, the rest of the pictures are pretty old. The number 7 used to be all red, and they called it the Oriental Express or some crazy shit like that. Probably a lot of Chinese or Asians take it from Flushing to Manhattan, like myself.

Now even the subway is gentrified with better car and air conditioning, used to be an oven in the summer not too long ago. Since the Giuliani administration, we have made some progress. But don't expect to get a cellphone call while in the tunnel, maybe 2008 we will get wired near the platform but not inside the tunnel. A big part of the number 7 runs elevated above ground so it's good for cell reception, but i don't have any friends to call or be called so it doesn't concern me at all. I digress.

Don't get scared taking the subway, most people in NYC are friendly, that's in our own way. Hong Kong is very homogeneous and the subway or MTR is very sterilized and efficient, it's a big difference.

laichungleung: still no cell reception? can't believe it? what if there's an accident?

We kind of live in the stone age as far as cellphone reception is concerned.

The MTA figures we have been doing just fine without cell for some 100 years already, maybe we do do without for another 100 years ... so screw the cellphones. It's probably a blessing in disguise so no self important people can yelp on the phone on the whole 30 minute train ride. People mostly read or listen to their iPod when commuting to work. We don't talk to strangers on the train.

Accident, what accident? We just sit tight or stand still. Or like terror attack? The whole human race would still move on without a train load of neurotic New Yorkers. Some people might even cherish that ....

actually, the first I went inside the subway station, I was someone peeing...haha

That wasn't too bad, I "saw" some crazy "woman" taking a crap in the middle of the night on a train platform. It was late at night and it was far away outdoorsy so I got lucky not able to see anything clearer than I wanted to. But that was a bad omen, later that night I got robbed. But I got to keep my Ray Bans aviator and my Chinese cassette tape. I told them that was some Chinese Cantonese crap they won't know anyway. That's was in the late 80s ... when I was young and stupid and New York City was edgy and dangerous.

laichungleung: what i meant by accidents is when there's small fire in the tunnel or the train got stuck or sth like that. u know, ppl in HK would freak out and make phone calls whenever these happen. and cell phone reception is quite important in case of emergency ma. wow, u once got robbed? oh but that's quite minor comparing to other assaults i guess...

tofufa: ha!
