前兩天趁The Art of Mark Rothko (Selections from the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC)馬克.羅斯科的藝術: 華盛頓國立美術館藏品選的最後數天, 跑了去看. 這麼遲才去參觀, 便知道我對名畫及藝術家認識不多, "真係唔係我個範". 不過上個月都看過在紐約拍賣Mark Rothko其中一幅名畫的新聞片, 開始知道他是何方神聖. 其實香港藝術館入場費只是$10, 有一天更是免費, 除這個畫展外, 更有其他藝術展品, 是很好的消閒及學習地方, 偶然吸收多點藝術感嘛!
Mark Rothko(1903-1970)原名Marcus Rothkowitz, 出生於俄羅斯的Dvinsk, 即現時拉脫維亞(Latvia)的Daugavpils, 是個拉脫維亞猶太人, 1913年遷往美國Oregon的Portland, 在Portland讀中學, 後來在東岸的耶魯大學(Yale)讀過一年, 是Abstract Expressionist(抽象表現主義畫家)的典範.
太多的文字只是紙上談兵, 不如看看他不同年代的作品.

Mark Rothko許多後期作品都是兩至四個長形方塊為主體, 方塊以垂直形式排列在色彩鮮艷的底色之上. 介紹單張上形容Rothko到了1950年, 已建立了個人的經典風格, 而這風格成就了他一直以來的藝術理想: "以簡單的表現手法表達複雜的思想"(the simple expression of the complex thought).
這篇文章的第一幅畫(即畫展的海報)是Rothko逝世那年的作品, Untitled (1970) Acrylic on canvas. 六十年代時他的創作都較灰, 但這幅是充滿活力的紅. Rothko於1970年二月廿五日自殺身亡. 當天在廿七件展品當中, 我最喜歡No.9及No.7/No.11.

差點忘記說說當天藝術館在畫展外安排了一個藝術教育角, 頗有趣的玩意, 對沒有受過特別美術訓練的觀眾如我十分inspiring. 原來顏色和音樂有著很大的關連, 閉上眼睛, 聽著音樂, 發現不同的音樂有不同的色彩.
