"When we judge or criticize another person, it says nothing about that person; it merely says something about our own need to be critical." ~ anonymous

"We judge others by their behavior. We judge ourselves by our intentions." ~ Ian Percy

Like you, I don't find myself belonging to anywhere at any given time. This is actually quite sad!!

Quote from F. Scott Fitzgerald's 《The Great Gatsby》~ “Whenever you feel like criticizing anyone, just remember that all the people in this world haven’t had the advantages that you’ve had.”

anon: hmm, maybe everyone feels this kind of lost once in a while. not too sad, just lost.

rachel: thanks for the quote, but not this one.

How we criticize others and what we say about others is more of a reflection of our own personal views, insights, and unfortunately, also our ignorances, prejudices, and biases. I see the source of those weakness and short comings every time I look at a mirror.

kempton: true, and it's unfair to be judged but we can't do anything.

2 points.

specificity. "論斷人". we must not confuse commenting/judging on a person him/herself, with commenting/judging on a person's particular act of behaviour or views/opinions. i'm fine with the latter. but i've seen too many cases where people confuse the 2 and take things amiss personally. the specificity requirement is on both the one who comment/judge and the subject.

we certainly cannot judge a person on the whole because we will never have complete knowledge of him/her. even if we are talking about a particular aspect of a person, the relative position between the one who comment/judge and the subject is the most critical factor determining whether the act of comment/judgment is just.

PK_: thanks. i understand, but well sometimes ppl just don't care, they judge from what they heard or overheard, w/o knowing much abt the whole picture.

maybe we can see comment/judgment as views/opinions, as they actually are by nature.

then there are always good/bad views/opinions.

it could be as simple as that. the best response could be just a laugh.

take it easy.
